Forges and furnaces were constructed near iron mines. These works processed - or converted - raw iron into iron that could be made into goods. Local blacksmiths used Adirondack iron to make nails, kitchen hardware, and farming tools. Iron was also shipped to larger industrial areas like Troy, New York and was cast in molds to make pots, pans, and stoves.
