Who were the loggers? In ethnic origin they were a mixed lot: English, French-Canadian, Irish, Scotch-Irish, Italian, Scandinavian, German, Polish, Lithuanian, Russian.
Work was hard, accidents frequent, pay minimal and hours long. The lumberjacks usually worked from 5:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.. Top wage was $2.50 per day, which included four meals a day. The men went into the woods in the fall and did not come out until the drive was finished in the spring.
